All About Us

Be it playing alongside internationally-acclaimed musicians or entertaining passengers aboard some of the world's best-loved cruise ships, playing formal concerts or rocking out in Spark Arena to a crowd of 6000, or even playing for film and television, we've done it all. Led by partners in life as well as on stage Joella Pinto (violin) and Martin Roberts (cello), the Arcus Quartet was formed in 2014 with Hanny Lee (violin) and Julie Park (viola), and has since grown to accommodate a larger roster of other fantastic musicians, most recently Lydia Sewell (violin) and Shirley Shang (viola). We are all classically-trained musicians, with a combined 35+ years of tertiary education and experience. Our training comes from the University of Auckland (NZ), the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto, Canada), the Royal Academy of Music (London, UK), the UC Santa Barbara (California, USA), the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen (Trossingen, Germany), and the Duquesne University (Pennsylvania, USA). We have collectively performed in 4 continents within multiple ensembles such as the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen. All of this comes together to form one of New Zealand's most diverse and dynamic string quartets who are at home playing any type of music in any setting, be it for corporate functions and private events, or fully-fledged concerts and recitals.

We are a very friendly group and aim to make our music available to as many people as we can, so don't hesitate to contact us if you'd like some music - we may be more affordable than you think!
